Portsmouth Water's Capital Grant Scheme
The Capital Grant Scheme works to directly assist farmer (and other land managers) in sensitive groundwater catchments of Portsmouth Water's drinking water supply sources, by part-funding capital items that should reduce the risk of nitrate and other losses to groundwater. Portsmouth Water can offer grants which cover up to 50% of the costs of an item/works (capped at £10,000), this includes grant support for precision farming kit such as GPS controllers and receivers. In addition, the scheme provides an opportunity for the applicant to come up with their own preferred improvement options that will protect drinking water quality and other controlled waters, whilst improving the efficiency of own agricultural practices. Please see the Grant Schemes page for further information.
Precision N mapping (precision farming)
This continues a trial using field mapping, mineral nitrogen sampling and spreader calibration to micromanage nitrate application on a proportion of each farm, so as to help reduce nitrate in drinking water and nutrient enrichment of coastal waters. Six farms are already involved in the programme. There is no further availability at this time.
Precision P mapping (precision farming)
A limited trial comprising field mapping, Broad Spectrum sampling and spreader calibration for strategic phosphorus application on a proportion of each farm to encourage better soil management. This in turn should lead to the reduction of soil and phosphate losses to water environments. There is very limited availability of this service and note that applicants must have access to the appropriate equipment.
